Favorites😊 and (´｡• ᵕ •｡ˋ) — both are smiling faces, but they are completely different creatures. An emoji is a single pictographic character, while a kaomoji is a face assembled from multiple text characters. Once you understand this difference, it becomes clear which one to use where.
How they work
An emoji is registered in Unicode as a single code meaning "smiling face," and the actual picture is drawn by the device maker. That's why the same 😊 looks different on an iPhone and a Galaxy. A kaomoji is ordinary characters — brackets, accents, letters from foreign scripts — arranged into a face. In (´｡• ᵕ •｡ˋ), the ᵕ is a superscript character and the ｡ is a Japanese punctuation mark.
